Mann Lake is pleased to announce a unique partnership with the University of Minnesota Bee Lab. In an effort to support the work in Dr. Marla Spivak's lab, Mann Lake will donate $5.00 for each unit sold of our most popular beekeeping kits (look for the logo in our catalog) and give Five for the Hive. By purchasing one of these items, you are helping support the vision of a new, dedicated laboratory facility for bee research at the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Marla Spivak's interest in bees began as an undergraduate when she was invited to work for a commercial beekeeper in New Mexico. From that early experience, Marla went on to earn her Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. Currently, Dr. Spivak is a distinguished McKnight Professor and Extension Entomologist at the University of Minnesota as well as the 2010 recipient of a MacArthur genius award for her research and extension efforts on honey bees. Her work focuses on protecting the health of all bees through promoting bees' natural defenses such as hygienic behavior and propolis collection. She and her excellent graduate students are also working on promoting sustainable beekeeping practices and propagating floral rich and pesticide-free landscapes to support the health and diversity of bee pollinators.
